First, Next, Then—Giving Your Toddler Comfort and Structure

First, Next, Then—Giving Your Toddler Comfort and Structure

Hey Mumma and Daddy! Did you know that everyday things work like magic for me? They help me get through the day and know what's coming up. I feel safe and happy when I know what to expect. Let's talk about how habits make things more fun and how they help me.

My Growth and the Role of Routines

For me, routines help:

Understand the Order of Events:  Knowing what's coming up helps me get ready for it.

Feel Secure and Predictable: I feel safe and calm when things always go the same way.

Learn Important Skills: Doing things in a certain order helps me learn how to fix problems, see how one action can lead to another, and follow a plan.

How to Make Routines Work in Real Life

How to Take a Bath

What Happened: Mom, let's get my clothes and towel first. Can I help you turn on the water while you watch? I also enjoy putting the bath soap in the pump. This helps me get better at using my little muscles.

How to Tell a Story: You'll say, "First, we get the towel, next we turn on the water, then we add the soap." It helps me learn and do things the right way.

Routines for getting up and going to bed

Predictability: I know what to expect because I do the same things every morning and night. "First we brush our teeth, next we put on our dress, then we read a bedtime story." The things I do every morning and every night help me feel safe and in control.

Leaving the House

Order of Preparation: "Daddy, let's do these things before we leave."First, put your shoes on. Then, sit down in the car seat and buckle up. This helps me get better at using my big muscles.

You can tell me what needs to be done and what will happen next. "Great, your shoes are on!" "Let's get in the car now."

Giving You Household Tasks

Tasks as Ways to Learn: I can help you with some easy jobs. It makes me happy and helps me learn how to do things every day.

Participation with help: You'll say, "First, pick up the blocks, next put them in the bin, then put the bin back on the shelf." You can learn new skills and improve your small motor skills at the same time.

The Good Things About Routines

Everyday habits are helpful because

Help Me Think More Clear: They make me smarter, which is helpful for school and getting friends.

Make Me Feel Safe: I feel less stressed and safer when I know what's going to happen next.

Build My Skills: Having regular habits helps me get better at both my small and large movement skills.

You help me be happy and smart as I grow up by following these rules. Everyday routines help me get things done and make things more fun.
