Look Mumma, I’m Smelling New Things!
Hi Mumma, exploring different scents is so much fun and helps me learn about the world around me. Here are some sensory play activities we can do together to explore smells:
DIY Spice Paints
Creating Spice Paints:
Turmeric, pepper, and cinnamon are some spices that you should use because they smell and look strong. To make a paste, mix a tablespoon of each spice with a little water. If you want the paint to be thick or thin, change the amount of water.
Activity Tips:
You can paint with your fingers or brushes on paper with these spice paints. This practice makes me more aware of smells and introduces me to art.
Safety Note:
Keep in mind that some spices can leave marks. Hands are clean after use, and I protect surfaces and clothes.
Nature Soup
How to Make Nature Soup:
Get natural things that smell good, like mint leaves, orange peels, or fresh herbs. Put them in a big bowl or sensory bin, and I'll use a pitcher to pour water over them while I stir them with a spoon or whisk to release the smells.
Engaging in Pretend Play:
If I start a pretend game like cooking or offering soup, you should join in! This helps me use my imagination and learn more about the world.
Cut and Compare Fruits
Exploring Fruits:
To find out what's different, smell both whole and cut fruits. If you smell peaches, they smell stronger than if you smell apples. Use this game to talk about and learn more about different fruits, maybe even ones we don't normally eat.
Educational Benefit:
In this game, we describe and compare the smells and feels of different fruits, which helps me build my vocabulary.
Coffee Bean Sensory Bin
Setting Up a Sensory Bin:
Put the coffee beans in a shallow bowl and give them scoops, chopsticks, and a small scale to play with.
Alternative ideas:
If the coffee smell is too strong, you could use water with peppermint oil or lemon zest mixed with dried rice instead.
Safety Considerations:
Always keep a close eye on them, especially when they are around things that could choke them. These things can be cleaned up and used again after play, so there is less waste.
Conclusion: Broadening Sensory Experiences Through Smell
By incorporating my sense of smell into my play, I am able to gain new experiences and increase my brain development. These activities not only teach me about nature, but they also encourage creativity and critical thinking. You provide me with a rich, realistic learning environment by utilizing several senses. Thanks very much, Mumma!
