The Lasting Benefits of Parent Child Bonding Time Beyond the Hospital

Quick Insight:

Mumma and Daddy, skin-to-skin contact may seem to be a magic act, one that remains confined within the first few hours of my birth. The fast pace of life should not allow this intense bonding activity to be ignored. Even as our routines take over, it continues to be very helpful for us to find skin-to-skin time—not only for me but also for you.

Why Continue Skin-to-Skin Time?

There are also excellent physiological benefits to regular skin-to-skin contact between a newborn and the mother apart from the emotional advantage of bonding. These include increased maturation of my digestive system, fewer crying spells, better sleep, weight gain, improved immunity, and even brain development.

Now for you, my new parents, facing a whirlwind of emotions, skin-to-skin contact is like an innate mood booster. This contact stimulates the release of oxytocin—the so-called 'feel-good hormone'-which may counteract any feelings of concern, anxiety, or even depression.

Maximizing Skin-to-Skin Time: Practical Tips

1. Shared Baths

A shared bath can be a gentle way to spend skin-to-skin time. Set up towels within reach before we get in the tub and, if possible, have a partner assist us safely out of the bath. This way we both stay warm and relaxed.

2. Baby Massage

Massage with coconut oil or some other baby-safe oil provides great skin-to-skin contact. Towels should be darker or older to avoid the oil stains. Massage from the center of my body outwards – this has a very calming effect. It is the act of touch, not the massage techniques, that matters most.

3. Intimate Feeding Moments

Feed me clad only in my diaper, with you similarly undressed, and a blanket draped over your shoulders for coziness. Ensure all essentials like water or snacks are within reach before settling down, especially if there’s a chance I might doze off post-feeding.

4. Tummy Time on You

Lay me on your chest for a special tummy time. This should be done right after feeding, as the rooting reflex may be triggered, which is a response making me look for more food.

A Bonding Experience for the Entire Family

Skin-to-skin contact is good for everyone, be it me, Mumma and Daddy, or even the supervised siblings bonding with me, the newest member of the family.

This would not just foster my development by incorporating skin-to-skin time in our routine but strengthen our bonding as a family, thus making the act truly worth every bit of effort one might make towards it.
